High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Olivia Rodrigo seems to be headed for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart next week, and she’s already posting record streams. In a statement to Genius, a rep for Spotify confirmed that on Monday, January 11, Rodrigo’s song set the record for most streams in a day for a non-holiday song, with over 15.7 million global streams. She then proceeded to break her own record on Tuesday, January 12 with over 17 million streams.
Although Spotify does not provide a public database of its chart records, it appears the previous record-holder was Ariana Grande. In January 2019, Grande’s manager Scooter Braun announced that her song “7 rings” had broken Spotify’s record by earning 14.9 million global streams in its first day of release. This is just a few hundred thousand fewer streams than Rodrigo earned on January 11.
“driver’s license” has experienced a massive outpouring of interest since it dropped on Friday, Jan. 8. It’s earned nearly two million pageviews on Genius in less than one week, a remarkable sum for an artist’s debut song just days after its release.
The song nabbed a prominent co-sign from Taylor Swift, and its lyrics have drawn attention because they seem to address Rodrigo’s High School Musical co-star (and rumored former flame) Joshua Bassett. Many fans believe Rodrigo is singing about Bassett’s rumored relationship with singer Sabrina Carpenter with lyrics like:And you’re probably with that blonde girlWho always made me doubtShe’s so much older than meShe’s everything I’m insecure about
Rodrigo’s TikTok about the song’s creation has already earned over 20 million views, and there’s now more than 100,000 videos using the song’s audio on the platform:
