Formed in 1998 by lead singer Kathleen Hanna after her previous band, Bikini Kill, disbanded the year prior. Originally, the plan was to create a back up band for Kathleen’s solo act, Julie Ruin. The band released three studio albums.

Like Bikini Kill, they focused on feminist issues and LGBTQ rights. In 2007 they announced they were taking an extended break.
