fromis_9 (프로미스나인; initialism of from idol school) is a South Korean girl group formed by CJ E&M through the 2017 Korean reality show Idol School. Unlike groups from other reality shows, including Produce 101, fromis_9 is a permanent group.

The group’s name is pronounced as “promise nine” signifying their promise to the viewers to be the best girl group. The nine in the name represents the nine members: Saerom, Hayoung, Gyuri, Jiwon, Jisun, Seoyeon, Chaeyoung, Nagyung, and Jiheon.

They made their first public appearance in November 2017, at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in Japan, where they performed their pre-debut single “Glass Shoes”. fromis_9 officially debuted on January 24, 2018, under Stone Music Entertainment, with mini album To. Heart., while their second extended play, To. Day has seen its daylight in early June. It marked the temporary absence of member Gyuri due to her participation in Mnet’s survival show, Produce 48, where she ended up being ranked 25th. However, she eventually came back before the release of fromis' third EP, From.9 in October. One month prior, it was also announced that the group will be under Off The Record.

They managed to make another comeback in June 2019 with the single album FUN FACTORY whilst revealing their official fandom name, flover during their 1st debut anniversary.

In mid-February 2020, it was confirmed that fromis_9 would make their official debut in Japan with the Japanese version of the From.9 title track, “LOVE BOMB”, however, due to a sudden spread of COVID-19, the single slated for a March 13 release and all of the promotions were delayed. Instead, the group’s third Korean mini album, My Little Society dropped on September 16 along with the title track “Feel Good (SECRET CODE)”. Initially, their second single album, May 2021’s 9 WAY TICKET, would’ve been fromis' last musical project to be released under Off The Record.

On August 16, 2021, it was announced that fromis_9 will be managed by PLEDIS Entertainment, a home to other groups, such as SEVENTEEN and NU'EST, while one day later, they additionally confirmed that the group is preparing for their first comeback under the company. The result being their single, “Talk & Talk”, which has saw its daylight on September 1 , giving them their first ever win, since their debut in 2018, on the September 7 episode of SBS MTV’s The Show.

In-mid December the group also confirmed they would make their return with the fourth mini album. Midnight Guest, fromis_9’s first project of 2022, supported by the title track “DM” was released on January 17.
