John Lennon and Paul McCartney are widely considered to be two of the most prolific songwriters in music history. As a duo, they are credited with composing approximately 180 songs, mostly for The Beatles‘ discography.

Although many of the songs within the Lennon-McCartney songbook were initially penned by either one or the other separately, according to Lennon’s 1980 Playboy interview, they decided around the age of “fifteen or sixteen” to form a songwriting partnership that would last until 1970. Despite an eventual falling out between the two artists, their intimate methodology began with writing songs “eyeball to eyeball.”

The last composition that Lennon-McCartney ever collaborated on is appropriately titled “The End”—the final track on Abbey Road, written and recorded in 1969.
