Monopoly Phonic

Artist

Monopoly Phonic is a songwriter, producer, performer and DJ from Manchester, UK, whose eclectic musical output chews up and spits out dirty rap, house music, PC Music–inspired hyper pop, K-pop–tinged EDM, 80s-inspired electropop, Y2K Swedish pop excellence, and DIY R&B.

Originally a drag performer, first taking to the stage with frequent lip-syncing turns at Manchester’s legendary alt-queer party Cha Cha Boudoir, Monopoly Phonic’s early collaborators included legends of the underground drag scene such as Lill, Grace Oni Smith and Sophie Satanique.

As a new wave of online DIY queer pop artists started to appear, Monopoly Phonic has found new collaborators such as Ayesha Erotica, CRYSTALBOY and Marcus Connolly, and has traded in lip-syncing for performing energetic live sets of original music across the UK and beyond, including at Homobloc, Manchester International Festival and Sounds From The Other City, as well as opening for Christeene on her UK tour.

Keeping the connection to the drag stage, Monopoly has also produced performance tracks for Rupaul’s Drag Race alum Pearl and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie inspiration Fifi La True.

In 2019, Manchester Pride’s Superbia programme awarded Monopoly a grant towards creating new work. While cooking this up, Monopoly can also be found as resident DJ and co-creator of recurring Manchester and London–based hyper pop party Girls Night Out.
