black midi are a genre-defying rock band from London, UK. The quartet met while attending the BRIT School and were noted for making a rapid rise to notoriety shortly after graduating. They started out playing The Windmill in Brixton and quickly gained a significant following by word-of-mouth. They also caught the attention of producer Dan Carey, who released their first two singles on his Speedy Wunderground label in 2018. The band saw a massive growth in popularity after a performance for Seattle radio station KEXP became a hit on YouTube and introduced them to an international audience.

They released their debut album, Schlagenheim, via Rough Trade on June 21, 2019 and it received universal critical acclaim. It was also nominated for the 2019 Hyundai Mercury prize, along with competitors such as IDLES, fontaines DC and Dave. Although they didn’t win – Dave claimed the award – it further shows the instant popularity and success of their music.

The band’s name comes from the Japanese musical genre, which they thought sounded cool.

They released their second album Cavalcade on May 28th, 2021. The singles off of that album were John L released oh March 23rd, Slow on April 28th, and finally Chondromalacia Patella on May 19th.

They released Hellfire on May 9th, Eat Men Eat on June 15th, and finally Sugar/Tzu. The record was jointly produced by Max “Sizzle” Goulding and Marta Salogni.
