As children, Calvin and Curtis Eubanks went to church with Johnnie Frierson in Memphis’ Klondike neighborhood–a once-haven for Black elites that had since deteriorated amid deindustrialization. Decades later, the trio returned to their roots to record the soulful gospel single “Can You Lose By Following God” b/w “God Is Going To Raise A Nation.” Set apart by Frierson’s caramel vocals that glide over infectious organ chords and a wailing trumpet, the 1974 recording is a rare slice of raw Memphis gospel.

Whole Truth was less of a band and more of a studio project. Along with an unidentified bass player and drummer, the group toiled over their instruments in Frierson’s home studio. Though their talent was undeniable, Whole Truth failed to make sales and get airplay due to the rawness of the record. Stock copies of the record and session tapes were stashed away and later discarded, long-obscuring Whole Truth’s endeavor. Until now.
