Sam Genders is a songwriter, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist hailing from the UK. Originally from Derbyshire in the East Midlands of England, Genders is mostly known for his work with Tunng, an experimental folk/electronic group.

His other work includes band formations with Tunng collaborator Mike Lindsay, Throws, and with a group formed from Memory Band’s Stephen Cracknell, Hannah Caughlin, and Liam Bailey, The Accidental.

He has also released a variety of solo projects and collaborations with fellow Tunng members under the name Diagrams, like 2012’s Black Light (released after a brief period away from songwriting for Tunng) and 2015’s Chromatics (produced by Leo Abrahams, famous for his work with Brian Eno, Regina Spektor, and Paul Simon, among others). “Gentle Morning Song,” the 2nd track on the album, found its way onto the soundtrack for the television show Weeds. In addition, Genders has co-written songs for Cabane, Cibelle, Mr. Silla, John Smith, Ben Ottewell of Gomez, and Liam Bailey, among others.

Genders has been writing and performing since the 2000s, but his latest works included 2019’s “Is This Real”, a collaboration with the AI Project, and 2020’s “Tunng Presents…DEAD CLUB”, a joint album and podcast series discussing death and grief via conversations with notable authors and scientists, and his classic folk-styled electronica.

His songwriting style is endlessly entertaining, with a mix of lyrical wit, endearing poetic intrigue, and the storytelling and earnestness so prevalent within the genre.
