大野智 (Satoshi Ohno)

Artist

Satoshi Ohno (大野 智, Ōno Satoshi, born November 26, 1980) is a Japanese idol, singer, actor, radio host, dancer and choreographer. He is the lead vocalist and leader of the Japanese boy band 嵐 (ARASHI), hence his nickname Leader (リーダー).

Aside from Arashi’s member solo songs, Ohno has released two solo songs credited each under alias of the main characters of the Japanese TV dramas; “曇りのち、快晴 (Kumori nochi, Kaisei)” by the name 矢野健太 (Kenta Yano) and “ユカイツーカイ怪物くん (Yukai Tsukai Kaibutsu-kun)*” by the name 怪物くん(怪物太郎) (Kaibutsu Kun “Kaibutsu Taro”).

According to 日本音響研究所 (Japan Acoustic Lab.), Ohno holds a very unique gift among artists with 1/f fluctuations vocals (also known as “Pink Noises”), which by some research articles noted as a vocal to create a relaxing and better sleeping atmosphere.

In 2004, Ohno was credited as a choreographer for the first time in his member solo song “TOP SECRET”. Since then, Ohno choreographed his solo songs as well as group songs for the band. Ohno worked as a chief choreographer for the live concert tour production of ARASHI LIVE TOUR Popcorn in 2012-13. Some of Ohno’s outstanding works as a choreographer are the lead track “Zero-G” of Arashi’s 13th album THE DIGITALIAN released in 2014 and the 52nd single “つなぐ (Tsunagu)” for the film 忍びの国 (Mumon: The Land of Stealth) in which Ohno played the main character “無門 (Mumon)” in 2017.

However, Ohno’s talent is not limited to so-called idol’s singing, dancing and acting.

As a self-taught artist, Ohno’s talent and passion for art are remarkable. Ohno stated that he was inspired by two of his favourite artists; Norman Rockwell, a 20th-century American painter and illustrator, and 伊藤若冲 (Ito Jakuchu), a Japanese painter from Kyoto during the Edo period. In April 2011, Ohno served as a special navigator for the NHK-BS premium 若冲ミラクルワールド (Jakuchu Miracle World), a TV program that approaches the artistic views of Jakuchu.

Ohno held his third solo art exhibition, FREESTYLE 2020 in September 2020. New art pieces were displayed along with the work from two of the previous exhibitions; FREESTYLE in 2008 and FREESTYLE II in 2015. On December 11, 2020, Ohno hosted a web-viewing event called “智とめぐる『FREESTYLE 2020 SATOSHI OHNO EXHIBITION』@Tokyo City View”, in which Ohno explained about his art while walking through the exhibition hall.
