The songs of Botanist are told from the perspective of The Botanist, an insane hermit who’s living in self-imposed exile in the Verdant Realm and envisions the destruction of humanity, while surrounding himself with plants of all kinds.

Other recurring figures are Azalea, the voice of destruction in his head, who can be interpreted either as a vengeful personification of nature or schizophrenia on the Botanist’s part and Arctopoides, “The Footsteps of Spring”, a plant behemoth that heals the land with every step he takes. These characters can be interpreted as personifications of the two possible fates of humanity in the Botanist story, destruction or healing, life or death.

Because of the lore aspect of the music, the releases in the Botanist discography are numbered with roman numerals, signifying the chapters of the story. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the story is released chronologically, as part five of the series was skipped so far. It can generally be said though that the numbered albums are progressing the main story, while EPs mostly function as a way for the project to experiment and expand upon its sound.
