Two years after dropping out of Berklee College Of Music to join the art-punk band The Young Snakes, Aimee Mann formed the new wave rock band ‘Til Tuesday with boyfriend (and former Berklee classmate) Michael Hausman. The name was chosen as “just something that finally sounded all right after hours and hours of stupid suggestions. We liked using a day of the week. We wanted a little phrase; we considered Sunday Best, that kind of thing.”

After winning a battle of the bands held by a Boston radio station in 1983, Til Tuesday’s indie release of “Love In A Vaccuum” got heavy local radio airplay, attracting Epic Records.

Til Tuesday’s first major label single “Voices Carry” went top 10 in the US in July 1985, sending the album into the top 20 there that same month. Its memorable music video saw regular play on MTV, eventually leading to a win at the MTV Video Music Awards for Best New Artist. The song also reached #15 in Canada and Australia.

The band toured with Hall & Oates and Tom Petty as a remixed “Looking Over My Shoulder” peaked at #61 in September, followed by a remix of “Love In A Vaccuum” which did not chart.

Til Tuesday’s moderately successful 1986 sophomore album Welcome Home spawned the top 30 single “What About Love”. It was called a ‘more positive’ album, in part due to Mann’s happiness in her new relationship with singer-songwriter Jules Shear.

By 1988, Til Tuesday was a duo of Mann and Hausman with hired guns to join them on stage. Their third and final album Everything’s Different Now was called “the most confessional album since Bruce Springsteen’s Tunnel of Love” by the Boston Globe. Shear’s writing style, and their breakup, both inspired and influenced the album’s lyrics and music – which gravitated toward ‘jangly folk’. Despite positive reviews, the album’s lead single “(Believed You Were) Lucky” barely entered the Hot 100 and Everything’s Different Now stalled at #124.

In 1990, the band bought out their contract with Epic Records. By the end of the year, they were shopping ten tracks to labels like Giant Records, but having to inform them that the new label would legally have to pay Epic Records a fee to sign them. Meanwhile, Til Tuesday continued performing to packed houses through March of 1992.

In 1993, Aimee Mann announced a solo career that resulted in several successful albums, three of which reached the US top 40. Michael Hausman became Mann’s manager. The two, along with her husband Michael Penn, formed Penn & Mann’s United Musicians – a collective that “provides marketing, promotion and publicity services for artists, while allowing them to keep ownership of their music.” Guitarist Robert Holmes moved on to other musical endeavors including the Boston Music Award-winning blues-rock quartet Ultra Blue.
