John Coltrane stopped working with Miles Davis in 1960 and formed his own band, The John Coltrane Quartet. Leaving Miles also meant shifting from Hard Bop to Modal Jazz. The John Coltrane Quartet was very influential in Jazz especially in Modal Jazz.

The band was occasionally augmented including the likes of Eric Dolphy in 1961. However it stayed in quartet format from 1960 to 1964.

The original lineup included:
Tenor and Soprano Saxphone: John Coltrane
Piano: McCoy Tyner
Drums: Elvin Jones
Bass: Steve Davis

In some ealier recordings Steve Davis was substituted with Art Davis, Reggie Workman and later Jimmy Garrison in 1961.

John Coltrane Quartet was very influential in its times, they are usually credited with influencing the likes of saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Jackie McLean, Freddie Hubbard and even Larry Young.
