Alberta Hunter (1895-1984) was a Blues Singer known for the distinction of being the first to be recorded and released on the legendary Paramount Records' race records. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, she started singing at the age of 13. Her first release would be on the short-lived Black Swan label, and she would sign to Paramount records who reissued her Black Swan singles and her newest ones. After Paramount went bankrupt in the mid-30’s, she kept her music career until the 50’s where she retired for some time as a nurse. After a resurgence in the interest of blues music, she came out of her retirement and released music to the soundtrack of the film “Remember My Name.” Two years later she would release her comeback album “Amtrak Blues.” Two albums later, in 1984, she died peacefully.
