Shirley Temple (1928-2014) was Hollywood’s biggest box-office draw between the ages of 7 and 10. Less than a year after her first starring vehicle (Bright Eyes), she received a special Academy Award for her contribution to film. She retired from acting at 22 and embarked on a diplomatic career that saw her named U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.
