Virgin Records is a record label and music distributor owned by Universal Music Group. It was founded as an independent record label in 1972 in the UK by entrepreneurs Richard Branson, Simon Draper and Nik Powell, as well as musician Tom Newman. Over time, the label grew worldwide and profited greatly due to the success of platinum performers like Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Devo, Tangerine Dream, Genesis, Phil Collins, The Human League, Culture Club, Simple Minds, Lenny Kravitz, and Mike Oldfield.

The now-prosperous Virgin Records was sold to EMI in 1992; however, EMI was in turn taken over by Universal Music Group (UMG) in 2012, now operating as the Virgin EMI Records division. In 2021, UMG renamed its independent music arm Caroline Distribution to Virgin Music Label & Artist Services (operating as an offshoot of Capitol), with the Virgin Records name continuing to be used by UMG in certain markets such as Germany and Japan.
