Otis Jackson Jr., aka Madlib, has been one of the most important producers of the underground hip hop scene since the beginning of the 21st century. He has been one of the most prominent faces in the Stones Throw Records. His production is usually very soulful and jazzy.

Madlib is also a DJ, an emcee, a multi-instrumentalist, a jazzman, and a renowned crate digger. His stage name is an acronym for “Mind Altering Demented Lessons in Beats”.

I started DJing, then I started making beats, then I emceed.

He first gained acclaim as the producer for the group Lootpack. Madlib is mostly known for his numerous and highly acclaimed collaborative albums, such as Madvillainy, Liberation and Piñata.

Madlib also released several solo projects, most notably under the moniker Quasimoto, his pitch shifted rapping alter-ego, which first appeared on Peanut Butter Wolf’s EP Styles, Crews, Flows, Beats.

He also works as a producer for his instrumental group, Yesterdays New Quintet, a Jazz-based, Hip-Hop and electronic-influenced “quintet” in fact made up of dozens fictitious characters as well as Madlib, himself, under his real name Otis Jackson Jr.
