The Black Skirts

Artist

The Black Skirts is a one-man Korean indie-rock act by Cho Hyu-il (조휴일), formed in 2009. Growing up in New Jersey, he drew influence from American music, particularly Alanis Morisette’s Jagged Little Pill and Michael Jackson’s Dangerous. Previously, the band was comprised of three members until they disbanded, and Cho returned to Korea to perform under the name as an individual act.

His debut album, 201, won Best Modern Rock album at the Korean Music Awards and propelled him to success. A majority of the album was recorded in his basement. On January 7th, 2016, he signed with the label Highgrnd and released his third album, Team Baby, featuring his parents on the cover, which received multiple nominations at the Korean Music Awards. Notable tracks from the album include “Big Love” and “Everything”. His 2019 album, THIRSTY, once again won Best Modern Rock Album at the Korean Music Awards.

In 2021, he released his English-language EP, Good Luck To You, Girl Scout! He is currently signed to his own label, Bespok.
