“Cross That Line”, Kydd’s first release of 2024, serves as an anthemic pick-me-up inspired by Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line”. In that song, Cash promises fidelity to his wife, to conduct himself in a way that doesn’t disgrace or defame her because he loves her:

“I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

According to Merriam-Webster, to cross a line means “to go beyond what is proper or acceptable.” It usually signifies violated trust, engaging in behavior considered harmful, deceitful, and disrespectful to the other party.

Here, “the line” is also the difference between knowing oneself, one’s emotional limits, and exercising self-restraint despite a situation’s gravity. It’s a warning to deter any would-be aggressors lest they meet their end. Basically, don’t dare poke the bear.

This track marks the second collaboration between Billy Gunther, Kydd, and Solo-G, the first being “Never Coming Down” in 2023.
