Set it Off

Set it Off

Big Daddy Kane

“Set It Off” was released as a single from Long Live the Kane and was a display of lyrical dexterity along with his performance on “Raw”. Kane said that “Set It Off” is his favorite song:

It’s that song that just always gives me energy. It might be a night where I ain’t get enough sleep, I’m tired, or arthritis is killing my back and as soon as we get to that song everything is gone. I don’t feel no pain, I’m not tired no more, I’m ready to go! That song just gets me amped! That’s my “go” button.

The beat was produced by Marley Marl the 45 King, originally for Kane’s labelmate Biz Markie and at a much slower tempo. Biz passed on the beat so Kane asked 45 King to speed it up and jumped on it.

The song is based around the drums from Grady Tate’s “Be Black Baby” and a guitar snippet from JB’s much-sampled “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved”.
