In October 1996, after Staley’s former fiancée, Demri Lara Parrott, died of a drug overdose, he was placed on a 24-hour suicide watch. After Staley’s death at the age of 34 in April 2002, Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age) told Rolling Stone:

He never recovered from Demri’s death. After that, I don’t think he wanted to go on.
