Deeper Shade Of Soul

Deeper Shade Of Soul

Urban Dance Squad

On the cusp of the 1990’s, this Dutch quintet showed us that rap and rock could co-exist without violence as long as you knew your Ray Baretto samples. But despite the fact that this song hit #21 on the Billboard pop chart, people decided that Limp Bizkit would carry the rap-rock torch …almost literally, at Woodstock ‘99. Suckers.

“Deeper Shade Of Soul” was UDS' debut single and it found success in Australia, The Netherlands and the US. It samples Ray Baretto’s 1968 song “A Deeper Shade Of Soul” musically and vocally. And since Baretto’s song borrows from Eddie Floyd’s 1966 top 30 hit “Knock On Wood”, this song also uses it.

UDS had further chart success in The Netherlands with their singles, but not in the US – earning them the label of one-hit wonder there.
