“Harlem Shake” exploded into the mainstream as an Internet meme a year after its release in 2012. Accompanied by a video, the dance craze soon blew up in early 2013.

Videos soon popped up with a common theme: a masked or costumed person would be dancing in a room full of people “ignoring” them, they slowly get their jig on until the 15-second-mark. Then “do the Harlem Shake” is said, the bass drops, and the video cuts to the room full of people dancing to it as ridiculously as possible
