138th Street

The Walkmen

A song that reflects on the life of someone who has outgrown the “Wild 20’s” life phase is looking to settle down. It related to the “world-weariness” or “jadedness” of the other songs from the album. For instance, Leithauser writes in, “The Rat”: When I used to go out, I would know everyone that I saw. Now I go out alone if I go out at all.“ It’s the view of someone who no longer goes out to party and is looking to settle down.”

Ezra Koening likes this song and says, “There was that song "138th Street”, and it really struck a chord with me at that time. I don’t know if it had to do with living uptown, but in so many ways it was very tied up in being that age. Even now, listening to it, it’s evocative of where I was living, what I was doing, how I was feeling.
