Bloodflood, about being flooded with fear, is the source for the name of the album (An Awesome Wave). This lyric is an embodiment of the record, evoking the concept of being engulfed by events and emotions. Alt-J almost go out of their way to be obscure in the lyrics, but eventually the melodies – and the meanings – emerge.

It’s about the feeling you get when faced with dread, like you’re about to get punched, or you’ve realised you’ve left your fucking passport in the hotel.
