“Before You Start Your Day” is a melancholy, piano-driven track that uses the analogy of morning preparations in the aftermath of a rough night to discuss insecurities and the masking of oneself. This imagery of facially masking internal struggles is shared by previous track “Trapdoor:”

He wakes up early today
Throws on a mask that will alter his face…
And he pretends he’s okay, but you should see, oh
Him in bed late at night, he’s petrified.

It also foreshadows the band’s thorough motif of nightly struggles later seen in tracks like “Ode to Sleep,” “Semi-Automatic,” and “Pet Cheetah.”
