As We Go Along

As We Go Along

The Monkees

“As We Go Along” was written by Carole King and Toni Stern and released as the B-side to “Porpoise Song” on October 5, 1968. The soundtrack version is a different mix than the version featured in the Monkees' film Head. The movie mix features more reverb on the electric lead guitar, played by Neil Young. The song soundtracks a scene which showcases the individual Monkees each in a distinct landscape (Peter in the snow in Alaska, Micky in a forest, Davy in a flower garden, and Mike on a beach), suggesting the four seasons but also working as a metaphor for their desire for escape from the confinement and stress of the Monkees TV project. The fingerpicked, psychedelic folk ballad features an unconventional 5/8 time signature, which proved challenging for vocalist Micky Dolenz. According to AllMusic reviewer Matthew Greenwald, the theme of the song is “ostensibly about surrendering to love – a novel subject for 1968.” The song was also notably featured in the trailer for the Academy Award-nominated 2018 film Lady Bird. While the song does not appear in Lady Bird itself, it is included on its soundtrack.
