I’m Da Man

D4L

“Im Da Man” is the first solo song by Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo. The track appeared on the 2005 debut by Lo’s group D4L.

In contrast to D4L’s pop hit “Laffy Taffy,” this song represented the group’s grittier street side, focusing on Shawty Lo’s reputation as a drug dealer. The refrain “got no wife but the white be my girlfriend” became a popular phrase in Atlanta’s trap music scene.

“I’m Da Man” became an underground club hit throughout the South in 2006. The song attracted wider attention after Lil Wayne and Rick Ross remixed the song in 2006—both artists' verses were then added to the song’s official remix, which appeared on Shawty Lo’s 2007 debut mixtape I’m Da Man.

While Shawty Lo did not appear on D4L’s biggest hit, the success of “I’m Da Man” set him up to become the group’s breakout solo star.
