Money and the Power

Money and the Power

Kid Ink

“Money and the Power” by Kid Ink is part of his 2013 EP “Almost Home” and also included in the expanded edition of his 2014 album “My Own Lane”. Although this Ned Cameron produced track only peaked at number 2 on the “US Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles” chart, its performance on the European charts was notably better, reaching the 15th spot on the “UK Hip Hop/R&B” charts and peaking at the 70th position in Germany.

On the 23rd of January 2018, this song was certified Gold by the RIAA for selling more than 500,000 copies in the United States.

This song revolves around working hard, enjoying the success that comes from it, and the idea that you can always do better than your best. There is also some commentary on some individuals in your circles attempting to suppress your success, or knock you off the position you’re in, as seen in “Ma-money and the power / Once you get a little, they just wanna take you down”.

Throughout the song, Kid Ink brags about being able to comfortably splurge, and recuperate his expenditures as soon as the next day. However he also warns of splurging responsibly as your wealth as a rapper could evaporate as quickly as you obtained it. The catchy hook “We, we’ve been going hard for too long” is a way of Kid Ink expressing the length of his hustle and the sense of accomplishment as he finally reaches the light at the end of the tunnel. Finally, he also addresses ill-wishers around you attempting to undo the success you attained, but he is self assured that he wont let them do that, as seen in “But I’m ready, ready, so you can tell ‘em to bring it on”
