How to Be Invisible

Kate Bush

“How to Be Invisible” is the fifth track from Kate Bush’s 2005 double album, Aerial. Moving at a moderate tempo of 107 bpm in D minor, the song can be easily distinguished as the one holding the greatest aura of mystery around it. Having only been discussed in the 2006 interview with Rolling Stone France, the only detail Kate has given in regards to the song’s theme is a slight annoyance at being told of its similarity to Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely”.

The latter having been inspired by Doug Richmond’s book “How to Disappear Completely and Never be Found”, users on the Kate Bush Proboards Forum identified that there is also, in fact, a book called “How to Be Invisible”. Written by J. J. Luna, the book was originally printed in 2000 and thus indicates there was plenty of time for it to have inspired the song. It has the subtitle of “A step-by-step guide to protecting your assets, your identity, and your life”, the last two items listed being something Kate has always highlighted of high importance to her. It is then perhaps ironic that Kate included the song on her comeback album after being labelled a “recluse”.
