Colloquially known simply as Buddy (remix), this quickly became a hip hop classic, outshining the album version. While Q-Tip had been smoothly making the rounds on Jungle Brothers and De La Soul albums, this all-star posse cut marked the debut appearance of Phife Dawg, combining the talents of both A Tribe Called Quest MCs on one track for the first time. The casual session ended up giving shape to the Native Tongues crew, a loose group of hip-hop bohemians that would soon define the aesthetic of Nineties rap’s experimental, Afrocentric wing.

This remixed version was originally released on the 12" single and runs over 7 minutes, so the radio edit used in the music video cut some lines, including the entire aforementioned verse by Phife Dawg.

The main beat is sampled from the 1981 single “Heartbeat” by Taana Gardner.
