My Prerogative

My Prerogative

Bobby Brown

“My Prerogative” was the second single from Bobby Brown’s breakthrough sophomore album Don’t Be Cruel. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award and peaked at #1 on both the Billboard Hot Black Singles and Billboard Hot 100 charts.

After completing production for the Don’t Be Cruel album with L.A. Reid and Babyface, Bobby wanted a more aggressive song and enlisted the production of Teddy Riley, leader of the New Jack Swing movement. The song became a signature hit for Bobby as he used it to help shed the bubblegum image of his former group, New Edition, and dismiss his critics while living his life how he wanted.

“My Prerogative” was given the #1 spot on Complex’s list of The 25 Best New Jack Swing Songs and was also featured on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of the 80’s” list.
