Top of the City

Top of the City

Kate Bush

“Top of the City” is track eight from Kate Bush’s 1993 album The Red Shoes. One of the first tracks to be recorded for the album, it gives the impression of airiness and being high up in the clouds over a city, but retains a strong element of desperation which some fans have even believed to be hints towards suicide.

Whether or not this is actually the case, the song depicts someone desperately searching for peace amongst troubles in her relationship.

Bush later went onto remix and rerelease the track for her first album of 2011, Director’s Cut before performing this version of the track during Act One of her 2014 Before the Dawn residency
