Flower of the Mountain

Flower of the Mountain

Kate Bush

Originally released as single titled “The Sensual World” for the 1989 album of the same name, “Flower of the Mountain” is the lead track from her first 2011 album Director’s Cut.

Much like the rest of the album, the track features many of the original performances but has had new “scenes” and textures added. Despite this, it is one of the few to break the chain of being lowered in key like many of its album counterparts are.

Not only does it retains its original key, but it also retains the lyrics Kate had initially wanted to use when first writing it. Bringing to life the monologue of “Ulysses” character Molly Bloom, Kate had initially been refused permission by the James Joyce Estate to use words from Joyce’s text. However, upon asking the Estate once again for permission, she gained permission this time and incorporated the text into the song.
