Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae)

Silento

One of the biggest dance trends of 2015, “Watch Me” is Atlanta rapper Silento’s debut single. This new-school dance anthem features two of the most popular dances of this generation:

  • The “whip” is a dance in which you mimic driving a car. It is unrelated to the “whip” swing dancing style that originated in Texas in the 1940s and ‘50s.

  • The “nae-nae,” which was introduced by We Are Toonz and popularized by Vine. “Dropping that nae nae” involves swaying your hand in the air while dipping down low and doing a rocking motion.

“Watch Me” is different from other viral hits such as “Hot Nigga” or “Nasty (Freestyle)” because its success stems from YouTube, not Vine. Silento’s label TuneCore partnered up with the online dance programming company DanceOn to launch the #WatchMeDanceOn campaign, which made “Watch Me” the inspiration to several dancing videos that received tens of millions of views.
