Bracero

Bracero

Phil Ochs

This song is about Mexican immigrants and their travel into the United State. It focuses on their new lives in states with agricultural economies like California.

The first great influx was at the start of WW1, ever since then the United States has had a huge amount of Mexican immigrant workers for these labor extensive jobs. Hence the title “Bracero”, which is the title given to worker programs in which the United States recruited workers from Mexico with agreements between both governments.

Mexican immigrants, just like most other immigrants in the U.S such as the Irish and Japanese before them, have experienced discrimination and horrible working conditions and they are often under paid, or fired for slow picking and having to live in poverty.
