“Are You Free” was the debut single by Mint Condition. Hoping to come out of the gate with an uptempo New Jack Swing smash, the band released the song as the lead single of their Meant To Be Mint album and the introduction of the band.

Their music video featured them playing their instruments live as well as dancing in synch as would an R&B group without instruments for the time. Nonetheless, the single stalled at #55 on the R&B charts. Producer Terry Lewis joked of the single’s colossal flop, “We still aren’t free.”

The story ends happily though as its follow-up single would be the #1 smash and soon-to-be signature song, “Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes).”
