The Prodigy

Released in 2002, This song was originally conceived as a song called “No Name, No Number” by Keith Flint’s shortlived Punk/Metal band Flint. Although reaching #5 in UK charts, The single, as well as the accompanying music video, was controversial and was met with a negative response from critics. The song’s lyrics were criticised in particular for heavily playing upon the misuse of the “date rape” drug Rohypnol.

The video, which features 3 smartly dressed middle-aged men dressing up and then becoming the prodigy was apparently inspired by a dream Liam had, as later in the video the band are seen playing live to a bunch of cows who inside a big top marquee are been milked for a baying crowd of punters outside.

When asked about the single in later years Liam Howett later disowned the single, saying it was “a fucking load of shit. I didn’t think it was shit at the time and I wanted to put something out to show people we were still around. I pulled on Keith (Flint) too much on that. Keith’s lyrics are very introverted and that’s not we’re about. The Prodigy are about fist-in-the-air shit, real simple. But it was important because it showed me exactly where I shouldn’t go.”
