A Tribute to the Early Days

A Tribute to the Early Days

Digital Underground

Fairly rare Digital Underground tune, as it was only released on the cassette version of Sex Packets. “Hip Hop Doll” is another tune appearing only on the cassette version of D.U.’s first album.

Contains a sample of Olympic Runners, “Put the Music Where Your Mouth Is.”

With regard to the song, it’s a fairly typical freestyle rhyme session from the mid-1980s. There are call backs to the early days of emceeing as heard in “Beat Street” and on old-school records (e.g., “my mellow my man”; “the beat don’t stop ‘til the break of dawn”).
