A Better Son/Daughter

A Better Son/Daughter

Rilo Kiley

From the 2002 album The Execution of All Things, “A Better Son/Daughter” is one of frontwoman Jenny Lewis’s most personal songs, detailing a deeply wounded speaker who eventually finds strength and determination in the midst of her depression.

Due to the swings in the speaker’s mood throughout the course of the song, it’s implied she’s suffering from bipolar disorder.

Actress Anne Hathaway (a close friend of Lewis) notes the track’s power, observing that “it’s become almost like a prayer” to her and dozens of other listeners.
