Lily [Director’s Cut]

Lily [Director’s Cut]

Kate Bush

“Lily” is a song originally released on the 1993 album The Red Shoes and featured in the film “The Line, The Cross and the Curve” of the same year. It was later heavily remixed and rereleased as the third track from Kate’s first 2011 album Director’s Cut, still retaining its segue from “Song of Solomon”.

Much like the rest of the album, the track features many of the original performances but has had new “scenes” and textures added. It is also notably the first song on the album to feature quite a stark musical change, labelled by some as ‘more mature’ than its preceding version. Furthermore, it features a drop in key, like many other songs on the album. This was to compensate for the difficulties presented by Kate’s natural voice deepening and allowed her to sing the songs as if they were newly written.

There were rumours that this version of the song was to be released as the second single from Director’s Cut, but this was never confirmed nor did it fruition. However, this version was performed as part of the Before the Dawn residency and a live recording released on the album of the same name.
