A Seat at the Table

A Seat at the Table

J. Tillman

Josh Tillman is writing here from cusp of fame, in the moment he was hired as drummer to the biggest folk band of 2010, the Fleet Foxes. By all means Josh has made it, he has been given a seat at the table, the wide adoration he craved since the days he left the church and his family behind. He has arrived, and he wonders: is this it? Without seeing his path ahead, without realizing that he would soon abandon this moniker and the band that gave him his big break for a wild success on his own, the final song of his final album under the name J. Tillman is a plea for others not to follow.

Stanza one is his delusion, his belief that his arrival will mean the happiness he has always sought. When he exits the delusion he finds no one there.

Stanza two is the realization that the only immortality one can experience is meaningful connection, is the commitment of a loved one. Perhaps, judging by his strange deflection from 1st to 2nd person, that person can only be oneself.
