“Stranger” was written by Ben Caplan after walking across the Macdonald Bridge in Halifax, Nova Scotia on what he called a “beautiful, perfect, sunny day”. He was thinking to himself how awful it was to be in such a great mood, because most of his songs are written as a means to work out tension.
As a thought experiment, he started writing from the perspective of a miserable and misanthropic eastern European Jewish man.
