Motley Crew

THEY.

This track off THEY.’s Nü Religion EP is a hip-hop and R&B-infused ode to ‘80s heavy metal band Motley Crüe. THEY. are Motley Crüe reincarnated on this track, dropping references to the rule-breaking, Sunset Strip lifestyle that Motley Crüe became known for during the heyday of 80s rock.

THEY. are influenced by rock, pop, R&B, and hip-hop, so Drew and Dante don’t consider this metal-themed track out of bounds. Their influences make their way into the tracks in subtle ways. Drew talked about this with Pigeons and Planes:

The thing with influences is that it’s not going to be like, nor should it be, an apparent thing. It shouldn’t be like, “Oh that sounds like New Edition,” but it’s more the undercurrent. It’s not going to be immediate but once people listen to the whole project they’ll see things that tie all the songs together and at that point the influences make a little more sense.

THEY. have also made reference to aging generations of musicians—like Motley Crüe, who played their last show on New Years Eve in 2015.

Drew and Dante are idolizing the greats and calling for reinvention, a sentiment this track embodies.
