Dark Sky Island

Dark Sky Island

Enya

The title track of Enya’s eighth studio album, “Dark Sky Island” was the first to be written after the break Enya took following the release of her previous album.

Having completed the almost career-long goal of producing a Christmas/winter album, Enya took a step back from the studio in order to consider her next steps. Travelling to the likes of Dublin, Australia and the south of France, it offered the musician the chance to have her first proper break since the start of her career.

While during this break she personally didn’t write any material during the three-year break, collaborator Roma Ryan continued writing poetry. With her subject matter surrounding islands, it wasn’t long until this zoned into Sark Island. The first island to be designated as a dark sky area, the community decided collectively to adjust their way of living in order to accommodate clear, unspoiled night-views of the heavens.

Known for having astronomy as a common lyrical theme, it’s unsurprising that it was Sark that provided the first inspriation upon Enya’s return to the studio around Spring 2012.

Despite this and how the astronomical topics stretched out across other tracks on the album, Enya has yet to visit Sark Island herself, but has described photos of the island as “stunning”.
