During the time he wrote this song he was into music by bands such as The Beatles and was also into the whole culture surrounding them, part of which includes the use of illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine.

Tonetta spoke about this song when he was interviewed by The Quietus

‘Drugs Drugs Drugs’ coulda been the first song I wrote in 1983. What kills me is [Dirk Knibbe] put it on the first album and it’s the same version I did in 1983. I couldn’t believe it. People were buying something I did in a bedroom in my mother’s house on a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
