Cheap Thrills

Cheap Thrills

Sia

“Cheap Thrills” was originally written for Rihanna’s album ANTi. The song was rejected and later included on Sia’s This Is Acting—an album that is comprised entirely of songs Sia wrote for other people.

The song was released as a promotional single on December 16, 2015.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Sia explained why Rihanna passed on the song, saying:

I realized just as soon as I was cutting it that it sounded a little bit too Brit-pop for her. It’s more Icona Pop.

The song is tropical flavored with EDM influences, much like Rihanna’s past works.

On February 12, 2016, a remixed version of the song featuring Jamaican hip-hop artist, Sean Paul was released as the second single off the album. That single went on to become Sia’s first #1 song on Billboard Hot 100 chart as a lead artist.

The solo version of “Cheap Thrills” went on to become the most streamed song by a female artist in Spotify history.
