A lowlife is defined by Merriam-Webster as a “bad person: person of low moral character.”

The title of The Weeknd and Future’s song suggests a reference to the word’s meaning, and their lyrics detail the activities they consider to be a part of a “low life:” drugs, alcohol, strippers, cheating, murder, and spending exorbitant amounts of money.

In addition to referencing the term lowlife, this song can be interpreted as a play on the term “high life,” generally understood as a luxurious lifestyle afforded to the rich and famous. As supporters of the “low life,” The Weeknd and Future turn “high life” accommodations into austere ones.

The Weeknd released “Low Life” as a Christmas gift for their fans after some teasing. His “Pass Dat (Remix)” was also included in the mini-release. “Low Life” was later revealed to be included on Future’s album EVOL.
