Can’t Do You

Can’t Do You

Lecrae (Ft. E-40)

“Can’t Do You” is directed towards Lecrae’s haters, a recurring trend throughout this mixtape. This song has been in the works since December 2014, when E-40 posted a photo of him and Lecrae in the studio ready to work on “positive music for 2015.”

During an annotation session with Genius Lecrae spelled out the theory behind the song:

The title is self-explanatory— I’m the best “me” that I can be, but I’m a terrible “you.” Don’t force me to do what you would do, because I can only be who I was made to be.

In the social media age that we live in, it seems everyone voices their opinions on how you should do you. if you play sports, there’s the coach potato sitting on the couch being a coach.

He also explained how he hooked up with E-40 for the track:

40 reached out to me. He was like, “Man, I really respect what you’re doing and how you move. I want to connect with you.”

I just so happened to be in the Bay Area— I had a show out there. He said, “Man come through the house” so me and wifey slid through his house and hung out with him and his fam. We were there for hours, just chilling and talking. We just became friends after that.

I put a song on one of his upcoming projects and he laced me for this. It was super dope seeing how he records and learning from a legend.
