Brian Fallon began writing the songs off Painkillers before, and contemporaneously with, Get Hurt,, the Gaslight Anthem album associated with his divorce. It’s easy to view this song as one associated with the separation that often occurs before a divorce—he is learning that love isn’t “all you need,” yet he’s not quite ready to let go of a relationship in which those feelings still exist.
