The second single from her 2016 album “Durt,” “My Hood” is Ray BLK’s love letter to, and honest depiction of, her hometown in south side London. Featuring fellow South Londoner, Stormzy, they describe what it was like growing up where they did, complete with local slang and everyday activities.

Though the song is sonically very upbeat, even bright at some points, the stories Ray BLK tells are not fully cheerful.

Given that she wrote this immediately after being robbed


while returning home, the duality of the lyrics as well as the juxtaposition of the upbeat tunes and the bittersweet lyrics act as both a celebration of the beauty, and a recognition of the broken.
